Hi, my name is Mireia Clua. I’m a professional violinist based in New York City, and I perform original compositions that I have created using the exact method I will teach you in this video course.

Discovering the looper pedal was a turning point for me as a modern violinist. With this simple tool I was able to compose my own music, groove, jam, and let out all the music inside me. I had lots of insights and made many discoveries along the way that slowly shaped into a system for composing with the looper pedal. And I felt the need to share these discoveries to help other violin players find this unlimited source of joy and happiness that I had found.

My experience with looping and performing, combined with my years of experience teaching improvisation and creativity to adult students, allowed me to create the step-by-step methodology that I am presenting in this video course. I’ll show you a way into the world of jamming and composing that will let you express the music inside you.

Questions Answered

  • You can use your acoustic violin with a microphone or pickup, or an electric violin.
  • You will need a looper pedal, which can be any model from any brand.
  • An octave pedal is very recommended.
  • You’ll need a simple amplifier to hear your music.

In the course, there’s a special lesson dedicated to setting up your equipment. And if you have any doubts or questions, feel free to reach out to me at support@mireiaclua.com. I’ll be happy to help!

You can follow this course with any looper pedal, regardless of the brand or model, as we focus on the core functions common to all looper pedals. I’ll teach you how to use these basic functions to craft seamless, musical loops. I personally use the Boss RC-30 in the course—it’s super easy to use, portable, and affordable—so I highly recommend it.

That said, if you already have a looper pedal, you don’t need to buy a new one. But if you’re looking to buy, the Boss RC-30 is a great place to start. Another good option is the Boss RC-500, which is an upgraded version of the RC-30. Other brands have similar models too—just look for something simple and easy to use.

The only prerequisite is to be able to play your violin! You don’t need to know anything about harmony, composing, chopping or improvising to begin, and sight-reading won’t be a barrier either. In this course I’ll give you all the necessary elements to compose your own music: chords and harmony, melodic improvising ideas, how to create bass lines, accompaniments, percussion, and the mechanics of the looper pedal.

This course is open to all violinists from all backgrounds and all levels. To follow the course comfortably, you just need to be able to play at least a few major scales. And more advanced violinists can use their technical abilities to take the concepts as far as they want to go.

This course will give you the elements you need to compose your own loops with any rhythm and any style you want. I will give you demonstrations in many styles, and you will be able to take each concept and use it to create music in your own style.

This course includes 4 hours of video lessons, making the lessons an average of 15 minutes long. The lessons are rich in content, and I encourage you to watch and revisit each lesson many times, pausing the video to jam with the concepts along the way.

I created this course with a violin, but all the concepts and examples can also be applied to other string instruments. Cellists and viola players can follow this course with no problem and take full advantage of it. You will only have to modify the musical examples and adapt them to the range of your instrument.

Absolutely! If improvising and composing your own music is something that calls out to you, this is the perfect course to get started.  Every lesson will present you with a very concrete and clear assignment, giving you a framework in which to explore the creative elements one at a time.

The octave pedal isn’t required to follow this course, but I do recommend it! It lets you create bass lines and adds depth to your loops, giving them the full, rich sound of an orchestra or band. In the course, I guide you through how to incorporate bass lines, but even without an octave pedal, you can still use your lowest string to create the bass layers.

As for octave pedals, I use the Boss OC-3 in the course—it’s great and affordable. I’ve also tried the Electro-Harmonix POG, and I liked that one too.

All the video lessons in this course are pre-recorded so you can watch them from the comfort of your home at any time that is convenient for you. There are no live lessons or one-on-one coaching included in this course, but if you need help or have doubts about the lessons, I will be happy to give you support by email.
